Our Richmond Starlight families really got into the holiday spirit after seeing a touching performance of The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. Before the play we met at Comfort to enjoy a delicious lunch in the cozy downtown restaurant open only to Starlight families. Meatloaf, turkey, and everyone’s favorite homemade mac and cheese was served. Each Starlight child received some kind of game, memory, Jenga, personalized Yahtzee and My Little Pony games for younger girls. For this Great Escapes event all the games were wrapped in festive holiday paper for each child to open. Games turned out to be the perfect gift, families had plenty of time to enjoy playing together and with other Starlight families as we waited until it was time for the show. The Best Christmas Pageant Ever turned out to be a play perfect for all ages. It was a touching start to the holiday season as we watched the same old boring Christmas pageant be transformed into something magical and exciting that helped kids to understand the meaning of giving all because of the Herdman’s, the six horrible children who showed up to church only for the refreshments. The six of them ended up the stars of the pageant. Gladys Herdman, the youngest and smallest of the six was everyone’s favorite character. She was cast as the Angel of the Lord who she confused with her comic book character, the Mighty Marvo. The church, prepared for the pageant to be ruined, show up to the most realistic portrayal of the first Christmas ever. When Leroy Herdman presents baby Jesus with the ham from the Herdmans’ welfare basket, the only thing he’s ever given away in his life, the audience was brought to tears by the most touching, best Christmas pageant ever.
