Starlight families could have used the help of Lightening McQueen this past Saturday afternoon, trying to maneuver the detours in downtown Richmond due to a runner’s marathon. The weather was much warmer than expected, making the new Starlight shirts a perfect gift, especially for those who’d prepared for the ice with wool sweaters. Before Disney on ice began we visited the Disney museum. The dresses of each princess were on display and we were greeted by Cinderella, whom some of us were already well acquainted with from the Knights and Princesses party last month. The familiar faces of Mickey and Minnie Mouse opened the spectacular show. Joshua Lemack enjoyed his hot dog and his eyes followed Mickey and Minnie mouse’s little red car around the stage as they waved to us all. Every member of the Marriot family kept their eyes glued on the performance as the ice rink was soon transformed into Radiator Springs and occupied by another red car, Lightening McQueen. Other featured characters from CARS included, Mater “ as in tuh-mater without the tuh,” Sally, the blue Porsche lawyer that assigns Lightening McQueen community service, Ramone, the smart low-rider who changes his paint job every morning, and Flo, owner of Flo’s V8 Café. We imagined the ice melting as we plunged beneath the surface of the sea and embarked on adventures with Ariel, Flounder, and Sebastian. We were all enthralled with the bright colors and melodic voices of Ariel and the sea creatures. But nothing was quite as interesting as our journey into the jungle for the Lion King portion of the show, filled with men in tights. The safari scene was set with gazelles, cheetahs, Simba, Pumba, and everyone’s favorite wise baboon with a walking stick, Rafiki, standing on Pride Rock. Last but not least we worked with Tinker Bell and the other Tinkers to help bring spring to the world. The finale to the show included a magically flying Tinker Bell, blooming pastel flowers, butterflies, and a great circle of dancing fairies. Family members of every age left having truly experienced the magic and excitement of Disney on Ice and many families took home keepsakes such a flounder snow cone cups, Ariel magic wands, and purple petal fairy hats. It was a night to remember forever.

Mrs. Galaxy International 2009 is Starlight MidAtlantic’s First Official Spokesperson
November 17, 2008Hello all! My name is Deborah Wright and I am the reigning Mrs. Galaxy International 2009. I am thrilled to also have been recently named the official spokesperson for Starlight MidAtlantic. I have been volunteering with the organization since 2004 and truly believe in what Starlight MidAtlantic does for our sick children dealing with hospital stays. My nephew was diagnosed with ITP, which is a blood disorder, when he was just 4 years old. We were constantly in and out of the hospital for treatments and blood transfusions. I wish we would have had the comforts of Starlight MidAtlantic back then.
I am looking forward to our big event this coming Saturday, the Taste of the Stars Gala held at the Four Seasons in D.C. I will be there as a special guest and I am excited to meet everyone there supporting our cause. I plan on dancing the night away so I better wear comfortable shoes! Hope to see you there!

Fun Center Dedicaton Party at Children’s National!
November 7, 2008
It was certainly an occasion to celebrate yesterday at Children’s National in Washington, D.C.-the dedication of 4 Wii Fun Centers donated by CBRE! The staff at Children’s National was thrilled to be the recipient of these wonderful Wiis Fun Centers, and the pediatric patients couldn’t agree more. The dedication party began with speeches by Brenda Shephard-Vernon, the Director of Family Services who spoke about how much the Wii Fun Centers help the kids at CNMC. As a representative of Starlight MidAtlantic, Katie Strumpf then spoke about the organization and the great work we do, and told us a bit more about the Fun Centers. Last but most certainly not least, we heard from Kathleen Thompson, who told us about CBRE, and how they were so excited to bring fun through the Wii Fun Centers to the hospital. Kathleen and Brady (see photo below) cut the ribbon on the Fun Centers, and we could finally play some games! The kids were so busy teaching the adults how to play, that we almost forgot to eat the cake:) It was truly a fun day, and we have CBRE to thank!

5th Annual Mother-Daughter Spa Day
November 6, 2008Pampering, pink, and prettiness dominated our 5th annual Mother-Daugther Spa Day last Sunday at Embassy Suites in Washington, D.C. The day started with the moms and daughters checking in (just like you would do at any spa!) and getting our special spa day t-shirts. Then the real fun began-the luxurious spa services! The lovely ladies could pick from facials, hair-styling and updos, make-up application, manicures, massages and bead-making. Some of the gals selected just a few of the spa services, and some got them all! While they were getting their spa services, everyone received gift bags with great goodies to do more spa stuff at home. We ended the day with a delicious dinner that was certainly spa-worthy! Everyone left the day relaxed, refreshed, pampered, and beautiful! We can’t wait for the 6th Annual Mother-Daughter Spa Day…..
