Clowning Around

June 26, 2008

On a bright Sunday afternoon in May, my husband (“Clown Gary”) and I (“Clown Judy”) volunteered with Starlight MidAtlantic at the “Spa Day & Little Heroes Party” as clowns with pediatric oncology patients, their parents, and siblings at Georgetown University Hospital’s Lombardi Cancer Center.  Clowing Around with NosesWe performed magic tricks, made balloons, and told lots of “knock-knock” jokes.  The kids laughed their little heads off and countered with their own “knock knock” jokes to expand our repertoir.

Clown Gary and I used our balloon pumps to put lots of air into pretty mylar balloons for each patient, and we often asked the kids to help with the pumping. Each balloon takes about 50 pumps of our small, hand-held balloon pumps, so we all huffed and puffed together.  Typically, when we volunteer as clowns in non-hospital settings, we make balloon animals and balloon hats out of special latex balloons that twist, but because the pediatric patients might be allergic to the latex, we use only mylar round balloons at Starlight MidAtlantic events.

We performed silly magic tricks and taught a number of patients at the party how to perform the tricks themselves.  Magicians, of course, are never supposed to reveal how they do their magic, but I can never resist sharing my secrets and then showing the kids how to do magic for their unsuspecting parents.  One of our favorite tricks is making a red handkerchief disappear inside a green felt magic bag.  It reappears only when patients blow a kiss into the bag and say “abracadabra.”  Lots of giggles….

After the event, we went up to the Pediatric Oncology floor to entertain from room to room the patients who were unable to goClown at hospital to the party.  We carried with us our four-foot tall “Froggie” that a friend recently won at a carnival.  As always, our really huge clown shoes evoked more giggles, especially with the doctors, because Clown Gary kept asking them if they had any suggestions for reducing the swelling of his feet!

We had a special and most rewarding experience.  Bringing smiles to the faces of Little Heroes and their families is the surest way to bring smiles to our own hearts.  Clown Gary and I recently expanded our volunteer clown activities to include Starlight MidAtlantic events at local hospitals almost every weekend.

Love, “Clown Judy” (Judy Kopff)

Ukrops Cookie Event

June 22, 2008

In Richmond this weekend we had a cookie decorating event at Ukrops Market Store.  Everyone got their own star cookie to decorate and load up with icing.  We had some creative cookies and other ones just loaded up with muliticolor icing and sprinkles.  Once we were filled up with sugar we sat down to eat a fried chicken dinner.  We had a great time visiting and getting to know new families.

Kung Fu Panda in Philadelphia

June 19, 2008

Our Philadelphia Starlight families enjoyed an afternoon matinee of Kung Fu Panda- The IMAX Experience last Saturday, June 14th.  The group had a wonderful time munching on popcorn and snuggling their new Kung Fu Panda plush animals while they laughed at the antics on the giant screen.

One Starlight parent was kind enough to share the following: “Thank you for another well-planned Great Escapes event.  The children and I loved the movie and they are sleeping with the stuffed animals tonight.  The venue was great and you, as usual, were a ray of sunshine.  Thank you so much.”

Richmond Clydesdale event

June 16, 2008

Karvellas FamilyOn June 11th, Richmond had a wonderful opportunity to meet the Budweiser Clydesdale’s horses.  We went to the Virginia Equestrian farm where we were able to get up close and personal with some of the Budweiser Clydesdale’s.  We also were able ask their trainers questions about the horses. We found out the horses we met were in the NY 911 tribute commerical.  After we visited with the Clydesdale’s horses we all sat down under the trees for a picnic dinner.  This was a wonderful opportunity for the families to get to know one another better.

We deeply appreciate Virginia Equestrian farm opening up their stables to us.

Fun & Games at Franklin Square

June 5, 2008

Summer officially kicked off for the Philadelphia Great Escapes program at Franklin Square on May 24th!

Star-shaped balloons lined the path to the party pavilion where a balloon artist greeted the children and their parents with his amazing balloon creations.  After a quick change into their new Starlight MidAtlantic t-shirts and a visit to the face painters, the families were off to play a round of mini-golf and ride on the carousel.  After a lunch of hamburgers and hot dogs, many of the children lined up to have their portraits drawn before returning to the golf course and the playground areas.

Many thanks to the Franklin Square staff, our wonderful Starlight MidAtlantic volunteers- Darlene, David, Jackie and Kristin- and all the families who joined in our afternoon of fun and games!
